Frequently Asked Question For Air Conditioner

Q. What type of air conditioner are we usually using in Malaysia now?

A: In Malaysia we usually use split type air conditioner. Split type means there is an outdoor unit and indoor unit for a set air conditioner. The outdoor unit carries compressor, and etc within it and it is usually installed at outdoor of our residential. Indoor unit is the unit providing cooling air in the designated room which comprises circuit board and etc within it.

Q. Currently in Malaysia there are a lot of air conditioners brand are pushing on inverter type air conditioner which is known as more energy saving than normal split type air conditioner. So what does exactly inverter mean?

A: An inverter air conditioner uses an inverter circuit(mainboard) to regulate the rotational speed of the compressor to match the output of the compressor to the cooling pump load. This reduces the number of times the compressor stops and starts as the load varies, so saving on electricity bills and reducing noise levels compared to non-inverter models

Q. How long is the warranty period for each air conditioner?

A: Generally in Malaysia, most air conditioners come with ONE year warranty (parts & labor for repair excluding servicing) and FIVE years part warranty for compressor.

Note : 1hp to 2.5hp the compressor warranty is 5 years
Above 2.5hp the compressor warranty is 1 year

For Daikin Brand air conditioner their compressor warranty up to 20hp is 5 years.

Q. What is the average life span for an air conditioner?

A: The average life span of an air conditioner is about 6-7 years, but it can be prolonged through proper maintenance by qualified technicians on a regular basis.

Q. Can we do the general service by ourselves and how often?

A: Cleaning of fan coil and the cover of the air condition can be done easily but to take out the water tray will be tough for some people. To vacuum the drainage system and to check the refrigeration level cannot be done without proper equipment.
Basically, it is recommended that residential air conditioner is to be service and check every 3 months and every month for commercial air conditioner. The duration of how often to service the air conditioners is varies with the different usage pattern and environmental factors. Please seek the assessment from a qualified technician.

Q. What is the reason when the aircond is operating but it doesn't provide any cold air?

A: The air conditioning system consists of two sectors with different functions. The indoor fancoil and the outdoor condenser. The indoor act as a blower to dissipate the cooling generated by the outdoor condenser. If there is no cool air blowing out from the indoor fancoil, it may cause by the following factors.
1. Air filters dirty
2. Object blocking the air inlet/outlet of the indoor/outdoor units.
3. Aircond temperature is set too high.
4. Windows and doors are opened.
5. Airflow direction is not appropriately set.
6. Remote control is not in the cooling mode.
7. Parts may be faulty.
8. Fan motor is clog with dust. Thus, cool air is being blocked, therefore cannot be blown out.
9. The air conditioner installed is undersized
10. Not enough refrigerant in the air conditioning system. Please contact a qualified service
technician to attend to your air conditioner.

Q. Why is the air conditioner leaking water?

A. Water from the air condition is discharged out through a drainage pipe that is run from the fan coil unit to the nearest drain. Water will start to leak from the fan coil if :
1. The drainage / pan or pipe could have been blocked due to some dirt being accumulated at
these area.
2. Aircond could be dirty
3. Poor gradient of the drainage pipe. Installer use smaller pipe size for the drainage pipe

Q.Why does water drip from the condenser (Outdoor unit)?

A. It is normal for water to drip from the condenser as condensation takes places when the warm air surrounds the piping condensate.

Q. Why does ice-form on the copper pipe of the condenser (outdoor) unit?

A. There are two possibilities. Ice-forming on the discharged pipe (the smaller sized one) is due to insufficient gas in the system. Ice-formation on the suction pipe (the bigger one) could be caused by a dirty fan coil unit or, a dirty filter or, the indoor unit blower is not rotating. A qualified technician should engaged to have the air conditioner repair.

Q. Why does the air conditioner produce a foul smell?

A. This is due to the smell of the room, furniture, or cigarettes being absorbed into the unit and is discharged together with the airflow. Please contract qualified serviceman to service your air conditioner in the event the air con produce a foul smell.

Q. What happen if I do not service my aircon?

A. The life span of the air conditioner will be shortened, coolness decreases with usage and water leaking problem may occur as a result of a choke drainage system. The inefficient operation will then cause the electricity consumption to increase.

Q. Do we need to service the Condensing (outdoors) unit? If, yes, how often?

A. You need to clean the condensing unit at least once a year to make sure the air circulation of the unit is not blocked. If you didn't service the outdoor condenser, then it can affect the cooling efficiency, shorter compressor life and even increase your electrical bill. Sometimes, it is subjected to environmental condition, which requires a qualified technician to give recommendations.

Q. When does the air conditioner needs Chemical overhaul and chemical cleaning ?

A. When your air conditioner starts blowing badly smell from the indoor fancoil, you should engaged a qualified technician to do chemical cleaning. The smell comes from the bacteria formed by microbes in the warm dark humid environment in the indoor fancoil unit. Chemical overhaul is need when your air conditioners is badly clogged / choked whereby the general servicing can not improve the condition. In an overhaul, the air conditioner is dismantle part by part and chemically wash.

Q. What should be done, if there is a refrigerant leakage problem?

A. If your air conditioner system has a refrigerant leakage problem, simply adding of refrigerant (R22 / R410A) is not a solution. A qualified technician should be engaged to trace and repair the leakage. Upon completion of the repair , a correct amount of refrigerant should be top up
